UNINDO TODAS AS CULTURAS

CONSTRUIR, COZINHAR, COMER, PENSAR…

BARRO PRETO: TROCAR E ENTENDER

DETALHES:
A oficina é gratuita! Todas as ferramentas e equipamentos serão fornecidos no local.

LET’S BUILD A KITCHEN
The Fire Kitchen is an exemplary process in which raw materials are transformed into a usable kitchen, a dinner table and a shelter: pots, fire stoves, tableware and roof tiles are formed from clay and baked in a wood fire, obtaining a black surface. A common feast is prepared with recipes from all participants and shared around a long table.

TOGETHER WITH ALL CULTURES
The workshop takes place at the canteiro abierto of Vila Itororó. The history of this quarter is strongly formed and influenced by the presence of different cultural backgrounds and living situations. Memories, that we collect in the clay objects.

BUILDING, COOKING, EATING, THINKING…
Through hands on work, the sensual contact with clay and cooking on open fire we make our fingers dirty and our mind free.

BARRO PRETO: EXCHANGING AND UNDERSTANDING PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE
We investigate the practical knowledge inscribed into objects and traditions of different cultures and aim for a convivial setting around shared food in order to create a fruitful exchange. The Barro Preto is an old Brazilian popular burning technique to seal clay pots and to make them suitable for cooking. Complementing an on-site research at one of the last production sites of barro preto, we want to share and exchange knowledge during the workshop.

PATTERN TECHNIQUE
The technique used to form the clay objects is no traditional handcraft technique that demands skill and experience, but a simple and replicable technique, using cut out patterns. It produces clear, elegant forms and is easy and fast to learn.

BURNING
The pottery is burnt on site in multiple fires that demand low technological equipment, but time of dedication and delicacy in the ritual.

HOW TO DO?
The Introduction about making clay objects and using them for cooking and eating on saturday 30th of september is open for all interested people.
The different topics, drinking, cooking, burning and roof will be approached in one-day workshops.
After drying, all clay objects will be burned in a collective fire, a ritual performance.
The final 3 day feast will be a continuous sequence of common cooking and sharing of food, drinks, recipes and stories.

YOU ARE WELCOME TOO
We wish to work with a diversity of participants from different backgrounds with different knowledges, age, skills and interests – students, neighbours, musicians, cooks, amateurs, etc.

INFORMATIONS
The workshop is free of charge. All tools and equipment are provided on site. Please wear closed shoes, as the Vila Itororo is under construction.

GOETHE NA VILA

What ist the workshop about?
After a theoretical and practical introduction into making clay objects and using them for cooking and eating together with all participants on sunday 1st of october, participants can chose days during the coming week to participate in the production of objects around several themes:
drinking preparing, serving, cooling cafe, tea, wine, water,
cooking steaming, baking, frying, roasting, boiling,
Burning/heating fire, grill, oven, table stove, and
building components rooftiles, tiles, and bricks,
in order to host the final common dinner feast.

The different themes will be approached in one-day workshops, where we will develop shapes and patterns and form the raw clay objects.
On the following sunday 8th of october, we will conduct a first burning and blackening of the produced objects in a collective fire that will resemble a ritual performance. Participants are welcome to take part or to pass by. The whole burning and cooling down will take roughly 24 hours. In the following days we apply different firing techniques, also depending on the outcomes of the local research and possibilitys.
From Thursday evening to Saturday noon we will invite for a 3 day feast, in which we will share recipes over a hot or cold drink, cook in our pots on our stoves under our roof or under the sky. The feast will be a continuous sequence of common preparations, tasting, sharing of food, recipes and stories.

The encounters within this project happen through sharing the most normal and every day activity of cooking, while simultaneously reflecting on the role of shapes and their culturally developed appearances, the moment of creation, food ingredients and their origins, recipes and tools needed, eating habits etc. By starting to vary, improvise, to create and play with traditions, a new common place will be formed light-heartedly.

Who is invited to take part?
We wish to work with a diversity of participants from different backgrounds with different knowledge, age, skills and interests.
It would be great to have students and neighbours, musicians and cooks, professionals and amateurs among the participants.
Criteria: openness, interest, passion and devotion.

Please send us a short application. The format can range from a small text to an image, portfolio, drawing, recipe, experience or personal application, that shows your interest and motivation to participate in the project.

The workshop is free of charge for participants!
You should be available for at least 3 days during the workshop period.
Please apply for one or several specific themes mentioned above and send us your contact details and availabilitys to: firekitchen.itororo@gmail.com
